SHAMANISM
What is Shamanism? A shaman, or guide/teacher/healer, mediates relationships between daily life & the spiritual world acting as a "hollow bone" through which the healing power of spiritual helpers can affect positive change in another's life. Shamanism healing is the oldest healing tradition in the world combining shamanism and healing. Have you ever stared at the sky when it was scattered with clouds, searching for an answer to an important question? Or perhaps you’ve sought counsel in Tarot cards, the Chinese I Ching or the Celtic Runes. These are forms of oracular guidance and problem-solving known as divination...

Editor's Note from Peter Clark: Divination is a cornerstone of shamanic practice. The root word of divination is "divine" - this practice is about seeking the perspective of the Divine. In general, shamanic divination is not about seeking the one true answer - it is not fortune telling, but rather an illumination of many possible paths. There may be a feeling of stronger probability for one of the paths, and if you are a hunter who can only be in one place, you'll probably pick that option. The important part here is that shamanic divination encourages empowered decision making. Perspectives are revealed, along with supporting information, allowing the one receiving the divination to walk with greater awareness on their chosen path.

Shamanism

by  Paul Levy

I tried to explain to the psychiatrists that I WAS sick, however, but just not in the way they were imagining. I had a creative, psychological illness, which is to say that my seeming madness was an expression of my creative self, alchemically transforming an underlying perturbance in the field of consciousness so as to heal itself...

Editor's Note: A true pioneer in the field of spiritual emergence, Levy describes the correlation between being traumatized, abused, and wounded, and having a shamanic initiation/spiritual awakening. See Part 1.

Shamanism

by Paul Levy

In 1981 I spontaneously went into such an ecstatic state that I was hospitalized by what I call the “anti-bliss patrol.” The authorities had become alerted because I was simply unable to restrain my enthusiasm at the “good news” that was beginning to reveal itself to me about the nature of reality...

Shamanism

by Susan Mokelke

I am often asked if there is an article that explains what core shamanism is and how it can be used in everyday life. This article is intended as an introduction to the subject, with references to sources on the Foundation for Shamanic Studies website and to the work of Michael Harner, who originated, researched, and developed it. His classic book, The Way of the Shaman, remains the premiere text on contemporary shamanism...

Shamanism

by Jim Ewing

Native Americans and most of the indigenous peoples of the Earth have known for thousands of years that drumming is a powerful spiritual tool. Only in recent years, though, has the scientific basis come to light...

Shamanism

by Steven D. Farmer, PhD

Malidoma Patrice Somé is a healer, teacher, and elder of the Dagara peoples in the small West African nation of Burkina Faso in West Africa. He travels extensively giving classes and workshops, and in one of his teachings, he describes how the Dagara believe there are three levels of intelligence on Earth. Plants are considered to be the most intelligent beings, animals second, while humans capture the ribbon for third place...

Shamanism

by Peter Clark,
ATH Asst. Editor of Shamanism

Shamanism is primarily about dynamic experience, rather than static dogma. This brief overview of shamanic cosmology is the result of the experiences of countless shamanic practitioners and shamans over the millennia – perhaps several tens of thousands of years.  It represents the common threads of what has been discovered through the direct relationships the shamans have with their spirit helpers...

Shamanism

by Ross Heaven

Since 2007 I have worked extensively with La Gringa and her San Pedro. They have guided some of my deepest insights and been present during some of the greatest and lowest moments of my life. She began as my shaman, has become a friend and I now regard her as both of these and as a mentor. I have spoken many times with her about shamanic and spiritual matters and her guidance has always been insightful but I have only formally interviewed her twice about her shamanic practices and healing work with San Pedro...

Shamanism

Editor's Note from Peter Clark: Shamanic healing is strictly on the spiritual level - at its essence it is not mental, emotional, or physical. But in the paradigm of the shamanic worldview, the spirit of something, anything, anyone, from human to ant to galaxy and beyond, is considered to be fundamental and core. As a result, shamanic spiritual healing can have profound ripple effects on other aspects of self. When a therapist uses shamanism in conjunction with more generally practiced psychological healing, the results are often quite spectacular. Persistent mental and emotional pathologies that had stubbornly remained under conventional therapy can melt away with the assistance of helping compassionate spirits.

Shamanism

by Beth Beurkens, MA

Shamans have been healing the living and the dead for forty thousand years. Shamanic healing deals with the spiritual aspects of problems and illness. In the shaman’s worldview, there are basically three common causes of illness...

Editor's Note from Peter Clark: Soul retrieval is a central pillar of shamanic healing. Everything that a shaman does with regard to healing comes through the spirits, and this makes the process even more mysterious and ethereal than the most cutting edge high tech medical procedure. Many scientists and doctors would say that truly nothing has happened. But in case after case, distinct positive changes occur in the patient's life after soul retrieval.

Shamanism

by Gretchen Crilly McKay

I am a sangoma. What does this mean? A sangoma is an African traditional healer who merges with her ancestors for the purpose of healing. It is a spiritual calling, not a chosen profession. An apprentice sangoma, called a thwasa, studies with a mentor for approximately two years and must learn how to prepare herbal medicines (muti), how to interpret dreams, how to incorporate spirits, how to diagnose illness through divination with bones, and how to heal both physical and spiritual illness...

Editor's Note: Having personally had the privilege of working with Gretchen in the past, I can attest to her amazing abilities and skills as a shamanic healer trained in the African heritage.
