"It's still hard to discuss," said Casey, a 28-year-old South City resident and U.S. Army veteran. "People were killed. We were mortared every day. Kids chucked grenades at us..."

Editor's Note: James Casey served three tours in Iraq, he and many soldiers like him return home changed human beings, many with injuries and unable to fully process their experience.  James shares that writing poetry has served as a way to put his feelings on paper, feelings that were difficult to verbalize otherwise.  James and other veteran's will soon take up their pens as part of the Missouri Warriors Writers Project, a joint effort between the Missouri Writers Guild and Missouri Humanities Council. The Project will allow local soldiers to work with local poets and authors in an attempt to process their wartime experiences through writing poetry and creative non-fiction.
