Our Actions Reflect Our Thoughts Like the Moon Reflects the Sun
by Silvia Mordini

October 30, 2012.  Yesterday was the full moon. The moon reflects the sun.  As BKS Iyengar says in Light on Life, "The meaning of Hatha Yoga is Sun (Ha) and Moon (tha), Yoga is which Sun is the Soul and Moon is Consciousness. Consciousness can be compared to a lens.  Its inner surface faces the soul itself, and its outer surface comes into contact with the world.  Inevitably a degree of grime attaches itself to that outer surface and obscures our vision.  In fact prevents us from seeing clearly what is outside, and it equally prevents the light of our soul from shining out.  If our house is gloomy because the windows are dirty, we don't say there is a problem with the sun; we clean the windows.  Therefore yoga cleans the lens of consciousness in order to admit the sun (soul)."

Our actions reflect our thoughts.

Taking this time to reflect on what we've been thinking that is manifesting itself into action is important.

Do you talk to yourself?  Yes you do. We all do, ALL the time.  The question beneath this question is more so about the "Quality of communication" you have in your self-talk.   We learn this lesson from yoga: that our world is created from the inside out. We communicate with ourselves first and this is echoed back to us.  The affirmation of the 6th chakra is May I see and perceive clearly on every level and seek only the truth.  The truth is that you create your reality.  While holding a difficult pose you create a story in your mind of easeful power and then the pose becomes what you want it to be.  Take this a step further. “To hold an image in our mind increases the possibility it will materialize.”  The more you focus and repeat the story the stronger it gets.

"We all have voices in our heads which talks to us on an almost constant basis. Our voices give us messages continually, and what they say to us affects us." - Juliene Berk

In yoga we actively observe our self-talk and we study ourselves to learn about ourselves.  This is known as Svadhaya. For most of us this is a huge paradigm shift.  We grow up spending close to 100% of our time studying everyone else.  We learn how to be more interested in what others think about who we are than what we think of our own opinion.  I look back at all the hours spent worrying and intensely studying how others talked to me than what I was saying to myself and now realize the emphasis was in the wrong place.

John Lembo says "Every waking moment we talk to ourselves about the things we experience. Our self-talk, the thoughts we communicate to ourselves, in turn control the way we feel and act."  In yoga we not only observe our thoughts but we practice talking to ourselves on purpose, with purpose. "Self-suggestion makes you master of yourself." (W. Clement Stone)  We learn that what we say to ourselves and how we say it impacts how we feel. We learn that we are responsible for creating our world from the inside out.  From self reflection we shine out.  Self-reflection just naturally leads to self-expression.

“Watch your thoughts for they become words

Watch your words for they become actions

Watch your actions for they become habits

Watch your habits for they become character

Watch your character for it becomes your destiny!”

However, let's be gentle with our self-study and learning.  If the moon takes 18.6 years to fulfill one complete orbit, then we can be patient with ourselves. I leave you with a final quote to contemplate this evening so you can love yourself, love your day, love your life! Silvia

Enlightenment is like the moon reflected on the water. The moon does not get wet, nor is the water broken. Although its light is wide and great, the moon is reflected even in a puddle an inch wide. The whole moon and the entire sky are reflected in dewdrops on the grass, or even in one drop of water. Enlightenment does not divide you, just as the moon does not break the water. You cannot hinder enlightenment, just as a drop of water does not hinder the moon in the sky. The depth of the drop is the height of the moon. Each reflection, however long or short its duration, manifests the vastness of the dewdrop, and realizes the limitlessness of the moonlight in the sky.
