Those who are horse owners know how expensive it can be to own and care for a horse. Routine care and feeding is costly enough but when something goes wrong and calling the vet is the only option you think you have, it can really cause a financial hardship...

Editor's Note from Cathy Alinovi: Foot problems explain 90% of lameness in horses. Abscesses are the worst of it! The abscess hides in the hoof - you can't poke on it so it's next to impossible to find. Guess, start digging at the foot - how scary as the horse hoof is the equivalent of our middle finger!! So, how do you draw out an abscess on a vital part of the equine anatomy?

Editor's Note from Cathy Alinovi: So often we wish we knew what our animals were thinking. We often make up words and stories for what we wish they say. Researchers at Emory University have made a step toward being able to measure our pets' thoughts.

Flower essence therapy is a quickly growing discipline. Flower remedies have been used throughout history but were first popularized by British physician, Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930s. Bach felt that imbalances in the emotions and spiritual state of a person led to disease...

Editor's Note from Michael Salewski: Flower essences are a safe, effective treatment for many behavioral issues and are an important addition to any pet owner's medicine cabinet. In this article Mary gives a great overview of this therapy and some guidelines on how to apply it to your critters.

Editor's Note from Cathy Alinovi: Mellow cats and vacuums - we love watching the anomaly. This compilation has some great footage of mellow cats.

Editor's Note from Cathy Alinovi: Guide dogs need to exposed to an incredible assortment of experiences before they are deemed "fit for action." Ricki, more a teenager than a pup, shows his great temperament as he goes through many not so exciting events. Talk about a good dog! What a personality! He'll be an incredible guide for some lucky person.

Here’s a personal story from my archives that I thought I’d share to testify to the wonderful properties of Chinese herbs. Disclaimer: It can be graphic in certain sections, and it probably isn’t the best story to read over your afternoon tea or lunch. Also, I would like to preface this by saying that should you ever encounter a similar emergency situation, it is always ideal to find your nearest veterinary emergency facility. Don’t wait until it’s too late...

Editor´s Note from Cathy Alinovi: Yunnan Paiyao (Bai Yao in some spellings) is a great herb! I've used it for many internal bleeding situations. Dr B figures out how to use Yunnan Paiyao in a novel way to save little Bianca. Dr B's story is a wonderful example of how problem solving works in veterinary medicine, especially in alternative medicine, as there are so many ways to look at things. Each patient is different and each patient needs its own treatment.

Unfortunately, finding a healthy pet food is easier said than done. Walk into any pet store and you'll find dozens of dog foods and cat foods in a variety of price ranges, all claiming to be healthy. How do we know what is the best food for our pet?...

Editor's Note from Cathy Alinovi: The biggest thing we do to our pets is feed them. Day in and day out, that's what we do - Susan's life mission is to protect our pets' food supply. All pet parents can know what is REALLY in their pet food; our pets deserve it.

The EPA sings the praises of composting. It enriches the soil, helps prevent pollution and reduces the need for water, fertilizers, and pesticides.  But did you know that it can also seriously hurt or kill your dog? There are significant dangers of composting to your dog, as revealed by ZooToo...

Editor's Note from Cathy Alinovi: My dogs eat everything, and I mean everything!! Sometimes, they wear the things they eat too, after all, nothing beats that aroma ;) This article highlights a few dangers of allowing the pooches in the compost pile - definitely things to think about.

Compassion also provides the crucible for healing miracles to occur. One of my workshop participants told the following story. Two years before, she’d longed to get pregnant but she had a rare, serious type of kidney disease...

Editor's Note from Cathy Alinovi: Judith Orloff, MD has shared with the ATH community how the positive power of the mind can change our world. By surrounding ourselves with persons filled with positive energy, we become so much more. Here, Dr Orloff shares pets have a wonderful place in building a positive outlook; our four-legged friends are committed to our best life, as should we.

The recent past has witnessed a steady increase of troubled adolescents interfacing with the law. The phrase “at risk youth” refers to an adolescent who struggles with moderate to severe emotional and behavioral disturbances, often leading them into areas which threaten their future - such as gang culture, violence, petty/felony crime, substance abuse and incarceration....

Editor's Note from Cathy Alinovi: Some things just don't need words. At SROL, horses teach kids things the kids could never hear/learn from an adult. Let's see what it's about in New Jersey.

If you talk to people and veterinarians about which oil to include in your dog’s diet, most of the time they recommend only coconut oil or salmon oil. I was a bit curious as to why only these two oils are recommended; why not olive oil or other fish oils? I researched and found that there are plenty of other options or alternatives when it comes to oil for your dog’s diet.

I am a professional entertainer, playing the piano and singing for many years, and find my most important quality is dependability...

Editor's Note from Cathy Alinovi:  Bobbee has shared childhood memories with us, now she shares an adult moment. A moment of panic, a normally dependable woman is unable to find something crucial to her stage performance - how can the show go on? Follow this story to see what role her dogs play in this event.

As is the case with all animals, their past experiences have helped to shape their personality and behaviour. Most animals have been traumatised in some way. Separation anxiety, shock, physical pain, are all common life experiences. Many owners are unaware of these aspects of their animal’s history, as they predominantly focus on its physical condition...
