from Lisa Nicholson

This recipe has replaced my Grandma's chicken soup as my favorite thing to eat when I am coming down with a cold or feeling under the weather. Ginger and scallions "release the exterior," a term in Chinese medicine which indicates that they open the pores and cause mild sweating, believed to help kick out a cold or flu bug before it takes hold. Peppercorns and onion are strongly warming, and will add to the recipe's ability to get you sweating. Dried black mushrooms are well known as a stimulant for the part of the immune system which launches an initial defense against an attacking virus or bacteria. Lemon or lime juice can help to soothe an irritated throat...

...I woke up two days later with a screaming sore throat, stuffy nose and no energy, a.k.a. a cold. Not in the mood to get sick, I looked around my kitchen and tossed together something that I thought would be better than Nyquil: Cold-Killer Beet Greens...

Editor's Note: I try to begin every year with some sort of cleanse. I figure it’s a great time to do something like this, seeing as though you may have indulged a little over the holidays. Now, there are some cleanses out there which advocate practically starving yourself for a few weeks, this is not the type of cleanse I am recommending! However, taking a few weeks to eat and drink nothing but raw vegan foods and fresh juices will leave you feeling incredible.

A staple at Saras home, everyone must know how to make a good pot of Lentil Soup. For all those vegetarians out there, lentil soup is a fantastic source of protein. It also serves as a healthy and savory comfort food. Watch Sara of Discovery Networks "Get Fresh with Sara Snow" while she teaches you how to make this hot staple.

Cacao, the ingredient that gives chocolate its character, is very good for you, in fact it can be considered a superfood. Cacao is one of the most nutrient-dense magical foods on planet earth. It even has a mythological dimension, named the food of gods as well as the food of lovers. Chocolate has the power to uplift our moods, elevate our spirits and open our hearts...

Healing Recipes

The onion and mushroom soup recipe is one of my favorites and will be one of your body’s best defenses this cold and flu season.  Mushrooms, especially the Asian varieties like shitake, crimini, etc. all support the immune system with their high zinc content...

Editor’s Note: With cold and flu season just around the corner, its time to think about foods that can help us boost our immune system and wipe out the invading bacteria and viruses that are likely to attack this fall and winter...

From Andrea D'Amore: While a lot of my diet consists of raw foods I try to do an exclusive, complete, raw foods cleanse at the beginning of every year. I got much more experimental with some of my recipes this year and this was one of my favorites that I used...

Now that the holiday season is here I get to enjoy one of my favorite pastimes. I'm not referring to exchanging gifts or singing festive songs, but instead to a fun game I like to call "Find the Hidden Meat in that Holiday Dish!"...

Ya’ll probably know that when I post a recipe, it’s going to be ‘my’ version of the dish.  No, I might not adhere to the strict guidelines of what ingredients a normally in the dish, but I can assure you that whatever I usually boho, it’s a yummy version of the original...

Editor's Note: Everybody can cook chicken, but we are always looking for different ways to cook it and this is a nice change. Ally has some great different recipes and a great facebook page with a collection of interesting recipes.

Healing Recipes

from Lisa Nicholson, Acupuncturist

This recipe is warming and nourishing to the kidney yang. It is useful for fatigue, sluggish digestion, and overall warming. Fennel and cardamom stimulate digestion, helping to break down the meat and potatoes while adding a sweet, aromatic quality to the dish...

Editor's Note: This is an awesome video! Actually the whole entire series of videos these ladies have made is pretty outstanding. Making raw "cheese" out of nuts and yeast is something that I have been experimenting with as I try to incorporate more raw foods into my diet. Nutritional yeast that is used in this recipe does lend a rich creamy flavor to many raw and vegan dishes where butter or cream would be used, its even good in mashed potatoes.
