Grace in Life
by Matthew Zorn

Before you give away your faith to something without, realize the faith you have within.

Have you ever wondered where the qualities that most of us aspire to incorporate into our lives exist? Where does love reside? What about serenity, peace, and forgiveness? Are they out in the world waiting to be discovered or happened upon, or are they within? Why do some people have these qualities in abundance and others appear not to have any at all?

The truth is that the qualities of love, serenity, peace, forgiveness, gentleness, joy, and wisdom are jewels of the Soul. These are qualities that we all have in equal measure deep within our very being. So, the question then is, why am I not experiencing these things freely if they are inherent qualities of my Being? And, if I am not experiencing these qualities now, how do I get to a place where I can experience and know them?

Most people do not have the experience that is conveyed directly from their Soul because they are too caught up in their mental activity and their ego. Identification with the Ego will invariably make you feel separate and incomplete. Once you feel that this separateness and incompleteness is your “reality,” you will not be able to experience the light of your own being. It is almost impossible to sit and feel content and fulfilled in the present moment when you identify with the ego. Your ego has a beginning and an end, but you do not. The essence of what you are is eternal, free, and omnipotent.

So the question remains, how do I attain the qualities of my higher self, or Soul? The answer lies in Grace. Grace is the power of revelation. It is that inherent ability to reveal the unknown to you. In a mundane sense, grace helps you to learn and accumulate things of this world. In a larger context, grace is that power that helps you to move from thinking and knowing something conceptually, to knowing it as part of yourself, as reality. It is that innate power that helps you to realize and know the “truth.” Grace comes through surrender and transformation. You cannot remain as you are and know grace. The sun shines for all and yet only those who choose to step into the light feel its warmth and know its light. The same goes for grace. It is always available (every second of every moment…in the here and now), but few choose to let go and allow transformation to occur.

The body doesn’t live for ever, so what do you have to lose? Grace is eternal and its invitation is inevitable, so why not accept it now? Silence is golden, and grace is known and experienced in absolute stillness and silence. So, the key here is to learn to be still within yourself… don’t be attached to the outcome. You can be fully engaged and active in the world and yet still be unattached to the results of your actions. Be present. Be loving. Be immersed, but leave the results of your actions out of the equation. How many times have you engaged in an action and expected a certain result? When it unfolds as you expect, you are happy. When it turns out otherwise, you are disappointed. When you perform action and remain immersed in the awareness and fulfillment of your highest self, the results are inconsequential…as they should be. No result will ever provide you with more satisfaction than the contentment that comes from the experience of your Soul.

So be aware and watch your mental and emotional habits. Invite grace into your life during those still and intimate moments you have within yourself. Ask grace to come into your life so you may be a better person. It cannot be bought or given away for free. It must be earned and invited of your own free will. Grace is not foreign or separate from you. It is the most intelligent part of your being. It will lead you to peace and eternal freedom.
