Are You Prepared to be Wrong?
by Paula Tarrant

Have you ever noticed how kids are willing to take chances? They will jump right into trying something new, exploring a new topic or learning a new skill. They're not afraid of being wrong.

And once upon a time, neither were you.

But as we grow up, that kind of fearlessness is educated right out of us. We are taught that being wrong is just about one of the worst things that can happen. And because, as a society, we stigmatize mistakes in the workplace, in our schools, and socially, we have become rather leery of taking a chance at something and possibly, quite possibly, being wrong.

What does this have to do with you, and your desire to do the kind of work that inspires your heart and makes you some money besides? Well, it involves taking some risks, doesn't it? And if you're going to really truly do that thing that's yours alone to do, really be authentic, then it means being willing to take a chance. And that means being prepared to be wrong some of the time as you learn the craft of your authentic, inspired work.

Sir Ken Robinson, author of The Element and a leading expert on creativity, says it beautifully: "If you're not prepared to be wrong, you'll never come up with anything original."

Wow. Now there's a powerful thought.

You are born with creativity, talent and brilliances that are uniquely yours; gifts that the world is eagerly waiting to experience and will be better for knowing. We think it's all about us, doing this heart-centered work that is aligned with our purpose. But it's just as much about fulfilling the obligation we have to those who we will serve as it is about self-fulfillment.

Remembering that is your first step in claiming your right to create the soul satisfying and meaningful work you have secretly dreamed of for much too long.

Isn't it time? Isn't it time you risked being original? Remember, there is no mistake you can make as you design your authentic life and work that is so severe that you cannot recover from it.
