4 Steps to Seriously Repair Sun Damage
by Victoria Girard
Editor's Note from Susan Lutz: Summer is slowing being tucked away for yet another year. The sun has had its way with us, how did your skin fair? What better way to find a path to better skin than someone who is passionate about it - just makes our job easier. Read these great tips and get ready! The winter dry season is not far behind!
As summer comes to an end you be thinking about how much time your skin spent in the sun; maybe a little too much sun exposure during those oh so enticing months. I know, I know, it feels like heaven on earth when the sun baths your skin in pure warmth especially after hunkering down over the vast cold winter months. But the more time you spend in the sun, especially unprotected, results in sun damaged skin which overtime results in lines, wrinkles, age spots, and rough skin.
So, now that the destruction is done what can you do to repair some of the damage?
1. LED light therapy
LED red light therapy actually has the ability to repair damage within your cells. Powerful red and infrared LEDs easily penetrate and soak into skin and tissue where they stimulate cellular activity, increase collagen production, accelerate healing, and boost reparative processes. This advanced technology, originally discovered by NASA for wound healing, is incredibly popular in spas and doctor’s offices due to the impressive results users experience and the fact that there is no pain and no downtime. But you don’t have to travel to a spa or doctor’s office in order to reap the rewards of red LED light therapy. You can use this intensive therapy in your own home while relaxing in your comfy pajamas. The DPL Therapy System and the Baby Quasar are professional grade systems that give you remarkable results at home.
2. Topical skin care
Using the top skin care products containing naturally anti-aging ingredients such as vitamin C and vitamin A will help repair some of the damage as well. Although not as powerful as red light therapy, these ingredients can make a huge impact on the health of your skin. Vitamin C is a very potent antioxidant that helps fight free radical attacks that love nothing more than to destroy your healthy cells. It also boosts collagen and elastin production and gives your skin a beautiful glow.
Vitamin A promotes cellular renewal and stimulates collagen synthesis but should only be applied at night because it causes skin sensitivity to sunlight and when this ingredient is exposed to the sun free radicals result. Wearing vitamin C during the day and vitamin A at night is a great one two punch in promoting healthier skin.
Exfoliating your skin 2-3 times a week will remove dead skin cells, speed up cellular turnover, increase cell renewal, and help your other products work more efficiently. There are a variety of ways in which you can effectively exfoliate your skin including scrubs, peels, masks, and home microdermabrasion systems. Simply choose the type that works best for you and stick with it. Set a schedule such as every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights before going to bed so that it becomes a part of your routine.
Okay, so this won’t repair the damage that is already done, but it is crucial for protecting your skin from further damage. Look for products with an SPF 30 and contain zinc oxide. Once you find one that feels good on your skin wear it every single day rain or shine.
I would never dream of asking you to completely shun the glorious rays of the sun, just like I wouldn’t expect you to forever give up your favorite sweet. Moderation is key and protecting your skin is vital for preventing damage. Adding these steps to your routine will help you repair some of the damage your skin has already undergone and help it look more beautiful.
