 Ayurveda and Hair Care

 

 

Editor's Note from Julie Cerrato: Hair loss (alopecia) and hair care is one of the most common health and beauty concerns. In addition to environmental toxins, it is frequently associated with high levels of stress and often accompanied by vitamin/mineral deficiencies. Ayurveda links hair loss to both Vata and Pitta doshas. Excessive physical, mental or emotional stress can increase the dryness and heat in our bodies and damage hair follicles. This stress typically extends to kidney dysfunction or in more severe cases, organ damage. Ayurveda recommends both a warm, cooked food diet and oils to calm Vata as well as Pitta pacifying herbs such as Amalaki, Turmeric and Neem to help correct hair damage/loss.
