Editor's Note from Thomas Muldoon: Read Part 1 and Part 2
.

This concludes our discovery of the symbols contained in the Tarot. The following interpretation of the symbols is found on the Rider Waite Tarot (the world’s most popular deck). This glossary is by no means a complete or comprehensive list but offered as an interesting guideline to the many subtleties found on the cards. Look for these symbols as you go about your day and contemplate their meaning to you.

Tower-: The foundations of ones belief system whether ‘built’ upon a real or false premise. Every so often our ‘foundations/beliefs’ have to be tested to see if they’re ‘built’ upon solid or shaky fundamentals. Card number 16 (whenever it appears in a layout) will always challenged the sector/house where it ‘falls’ (challenging this area of your life).

Tree-: The Tree of Knowledge of good and evil (bearing five fruits, representing the five senses) located in card numbered six and behind ‘Eve.’ The Tree of Life (bearing 12 fruits, representing the 12 signs of the Zodiac) standing behind ‘Adam’ in card numbered six.

Veil-: Symbol of virginity, of things hidden. In card numbered two the ‘veil’ can only be ‘penetrated’ by a concentrated/effectual effort, then and only then will the mysteries be revealed or made available for conscious use and not before.

Wand-: Symbol of will power, suggesting the continual renewal of life, often hinting at a phallic significance, linked to the element of FIRE and the Astrological signs Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.

Water-: Whenever and wherever you notice water in a card or in abundance in a ‘layout’ you’re looking at the subconscious, the emotions, the past, the memories of things and people ‘long gone.

Wheel-: Representing the beginning yet the end, the entire cycle of cosmic expression. Place yourself in the centre of the wheel and you’ll come to realise the entire universe revolves around your thoughts. Meditate upon this and you’ll come to realise that you are a ‘co-creator’ of the universe, a part of not apart from all that is, all that ever has been and all that ever will be.

Wolf-: The untamed elements within the human condition. (card numbered 18)

Wreath-: Representing the forces of nature, the kingdom of ‘growing’ things. (cards numbered three, 11 and 21)

Yod-:  Yod is the Hebrew letter symbolising the hand of man, indicating skill, dexterity and personal power. When falling as droplets of light (as in card numbered 16) indicate the descent of the life force from above.

Zero-: The absence of quantity, quality and mass. Denotes freedom from every limitation, the infinite, the eternal, the alpha and omega.
