Hypnosis ~ A Key to Your Intuition
by Anne Eyres
Editor's Note from Thomas Muldoon: I first met Ann through a friend of mine who was interested in any technique to quieten her mind in order to take advantage of her developing intuition. Ann suggested self hypnosis as a way of 'removing' her conscious mind for a moment or two - allowing my friend's intuition to shine through. You too, can benefit from self hypnosis if you find your analytical mind is 'too' powerful at times, more so when reading tarot, number, interpreting dreams, etc.
Why does the word hypnosis conjure up a range of different beliefs and reactions? Mind control being the dominant thought. Hypnosis has been around for thousands of years and used in many different ways by a many different cultures, but now, in the 21st century it is coming into its own, as more and more people accept the way hypnosis has been demonstrated to make beneficial changes at all levels of wellbeing. Hypnosis happens when we daydream, or when we “go into trance” where the conscious mind switches off for a while and allows that peaceful state of just being. It’s those unconscious thoughts that relay messages, the thoughts that ‘pop up’, as we leave the house: “is the iron switched off, have I locked the back door?” etc. So many actions we do automatically, without consciously thinking about it, because we work on “automatic pilot”, and develop routines to make our life easy.
“Self Hypnosis (when practised regularly) helps to sharpen and hone our intuitive skills by listening to and following the instructions given by that ‘little voice’ inside our head.”
Hypnosis then, is a natural state, where we all have the ability to utilise our unconscious mind to help us in many different ways. Hypnotherapy is therapy used while people are in the state of hypnosis, and the subconscious mind can look for the solutions to any problems and concerns. Our beliefs, values and perception are formed at a very early age. Everything we feel, hear and see up until the age of 7 years, forms the basis of our programming, up to this age we absorb all the information we are exposed to – like a sponge absorbs liquid. We then become the unique person we are because of those belief, values and perceptions. This explains why children in the same family unit are different because of their position within the family, different peer groups, schooling and other influences, all moulding their thinking and experiences. Our attitudes, actions and reactions are then formed because of our programming.
If as an adult, any of these become a hindrance or a liability to our wellbeing, hypnotherapy can assist someone find his or her own solutions and make suitable changes. A form of hypnosis is the power of suggestion, we don’t need to see a hypnotherapist, to be influenced by this for it’s a natural happening (think advertising) and we have the choice to either reject or accept a suggestion or, have we? In most cases suggestions are accepted as a given and acted on accordingly. An indirect suggestion: “it’s draughty in here” could automatically get someone to close a door or shut a window. Hypnosis is working when we are awake, with sounds, sights and imagery working on the subconscious part of our mind. How is it we can be relax listening to soothing music, stimulated whilst watching a travel documentary or become angry or frustrated by imagery of some news items? The power of suggestion, perhaps...
In hypnosis, we can go back and remember times from our past, we all have our memories stored away and can revisit them at a conscious level, but at the subconscious level, the whole memory of our life is there. Every thought, every feeling and everything we have seen is stored away in our memory bank. What are the benefits of hypnosis and hypnotherapy? It can allow change to happen for those people who have made the decision they want some element of their life to transform and change why they feel frustrated or lack motivation, why they lack self esteem and confidence. Maybe they have a particular manner in the way they interact or react around certain people or certain situations, becoming angry and aggressive, defensive and withdrawing from anything perceived as a threat. Negative or annoying habits can change.
The most common behaviour currently associated with hypnosis is quitting smoking and losing weight - any habit can be changed provided the decision to change is wanted. The subconscious mind controls our bodily functions, regulates our heartbeat, our blood pressure, every part of our nervous system, our digestive system, our endocrine, circulatory and immune systems. We don’t have to think about it, it automatically happens, but what happens when we have to attend a job interview or sit an exam for example? First there’s the thought about how we feel about it, fear or feelings of anxiety, then the body reacts, the churning in the pit of the stomach, the clammy hands, the heart rate increasing – all because of a thought. Our thoughts create the way we react, whether in a calm, tranquil manner or in a disturbed, agitated way, with the physical body feeling comfortable or uncomfortable. If we feel uncomfortable it affects all levels of our wellbeing, sleeplessness, stomach problems, and because we become tense and tight our muscles start to experience stiffness and pain- all because of a thought...
When we can instruct our mind to be calm and positive, to let things go, to release those negative thoughts that have affected us, then the body can relax and sleep improves, our digestive system can function effectively and we can be relaxed and be tension free. The power of the mind can create the person you want to be, just as the Power of Attraction attracts what you focus on to bring into your life what you want to happen for you. The power of the mind should work for you, not against you, it is your thoughts and the way you think that has created the person you are – never ever forget this...
