Amazing Sand Art by Kseniya Simonova

Editor's Note from Ellen Mahoney: This incredibly captivating YouTube has practically gone viral, but if you haven't seen it yet, you are in for a treat. Kseniya Simonova is a young woman from the Ukraine who participated in the Ukraine's Got Talent show in 2009. To illustrate her talent, she used her hands to gracefully move sand around on a giant light box to create many vibrant scenes that depict Germany's invasion and occupation of the Ukraine during WWII.  In the Ukraine, this war is termed, "The Great Patriotic War," and it is estimated that between 8-11 million deaths resulted.

Simonova's drawings come to life with music and depict the human reaction to war and suffering in a mesmerizing way.  I have shown this video to my writing students as an example of the great artistic skill shown by Simonova and as an inspiration to others in exploring new ways to create art.
