Words from the author of “BITE-SIZED PRAYERS: Non-Denominational Morsels to Feed Your Soul”
by Norma-Jean Strickland, ATH Assistant Editor of Therapeutic Storytelling
review by Keith Varnum
Author excerpts from the Introduction and back cover for the new book, “BITE-SIZED PRAYERS: Non-Denominational Morsels to Feed Your Soul”–
I have just released my first book and it’s about prayer. This book was a complete surprise to me and came about in a most unexpected way. Just over a year ago, I awoke from a disembodied voice dream that said: “The words will come. Write them down.” They did and I did! On New Year’s Eve 2010, I started writing my book at 6:00 pm and the majority of it was finished in 72 hours, including the selection of most of the accompanying photographs (which I also took). I am not necessarily saying this book was channeled, but it did come “through” me. Isn’t that how all creativity happens?
I specifically did not use any quotations from sacred texts around the world because it was not intended to be a scholarly treatise. My purpose was to show that prayer is easier than people think because each prayer is only one word. There are 69 “word prayers” with 74 full color photographs (which match each concept) that I have personally taken from various places around the world.
Living in today’s fast-paced society almost automatically means being surrounded by technology and gadgets of all kinds. Don’t get me wrong – I love technology and have even taught computer skills for many years. But I believe people need to have balance in all areas of their lives, including having an ability to turn everything off and just rest in the silence. How else can you hear your own thoughts? How else can you really get to know who you are – the real you, on the inside?
Prayer can be another word for meditation or just getting quiet. It doesn’t really matter what words you utter. What matters is that you pray or just sit with your whole being. Only when you feel what you are feeling are you fully present in this moment – right here, right now. That’s when you can truly be still and know the One True Presence inside you – your True Self.
The words and photographs contained in this book have universal appeal and are intended to speak to various concerns of our shared human condition. It is my deepest desire that this book serves to bring encouragement and inspiration to all who need it. Thank you.
