Earthing - The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?

It’s 40 something chilly degrees outside combined with wet and muddy. I'm sitting in my green Dick's Sporting Goods chair watching my curly-headed 6-year-old knock around a sloshy brown soccer ball as spring oh-so-slowwwwly approaches in Ohio. I look around cautiously and inconspicuously remove my feet from my cozy, insulated, water repellant shoes. And, then, nonchalantly place my feet directly on the ground. No one really seems to notice. And, frankly, if they do… I don't really care because I know it's good for me, darn it! But, yes, honestly I don't want to bring too much attention to myself. Because, if someone asks why I was doing this… would they really be prepared for the intellectual discussion that would ensue? To try to grasp that it isn’t just because my shoes are too tight or my feet are hot but because I’m Earthing?!

Let me preface this by letting you know a bit about me. The meditation work I do in conjunction with my work at All Things Healing is based on energy. So, before reading the book Earthing - The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?, I was already aware of the grounding connection of our bodies to the Earth. I also have a sharp friend here in Cleveland, Ohio who taught me that hugging trees was completely wonderful and healing (Warren Grossman, PhD - To Be Healed by the Earth). So, nothing new but what was new was "can't ignore" aspect of this book regardless of one’s beliefs on energy or spirituality – it’s all about undeniability.

How the three Co-authors put it is plain and simple… by being literally connected to the Earth… meaning you plant your bare feet or feet in a material that can still conduct energy (“yes” on cotton, “no” on plastic), you therefore connect with the Earth's conductive energies. Essentially your body becomes flooded with the negative-charged free electrons abundantly present on the Earth's surface. Therefore equalizing your body to the same electric energy level.

In the book they showcase studies, photographs and testimonials that prove why this simple process is beneficial. Earthing:

* Reduces/eliminates chronic pain

* Defuses the cause of inflammation and improves/eliminates the symptoms of many inflammation-related disorders like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes. Per the book, "Inflammation is now believed to be the underlying cause of more than 80 chronic illnesses and more than half of Americans suffer currently from one or more of them… the most common chronic diseases cost the US economy alone more than $1 trillion annually -- and that figure threatens to reach $6 trillion by the middle of the century."

* Improves sleep, increases energy, speeds up healing

* Lowers stress and calms the nervous system

* Lessens menstrual and hormonal issues

* For athletes, it increases recovery time and raises energy levels

* Finally, they also feature many testimonials that cover challenges from jet lag to high blood pressure and mixed connective tissue disease to fibromyalgia. And, I have to mention the section on Earthing and truckers. Gotta love that!

So, thank you Martin Zucker (Co-author) for sending me a nicely autographed copy of your book (where he aptly told me to “get grounded”). You have allowed me to really think about my connection – to reconnect again and to get a bit more serious as I had become quite casual (especially during the winter). Plus the book gave me options of what I could do in the frigid cold as I’ve tried standing bare foot in the snow and know it just isn’t for me. Now I can go to my basement and stand with either bare feet or socks on my concrete floor (best if slightly wet/misted to increase conductivity) – nice.

And, maybe at my next soccer game I'll have the guts, and actually the caring, to be an Earthing ambassador – to speak up and let others know what I'm doing and dare them to step outside-of-the-box. Or, literally, step outside-of-their shoes.
