I love daily meditation texts; obviously certain ones resonate more than others. My favorite has been J. Krishnamurti’s The Book of Life. A new collection crossed my path recently: Awake in the World: 108 Practices to Live a Divinely Inspired Life by Debra Moffitt. This wonderful collection presents a wide variety of healing opportunities in the form of short narratives that lead to concrete practices. The text asks readers to meditate on a particular theme and then suggests a ritual or healing practice to invite balance, sacredness or inspiration into their lives.

My wife called this book “Sacred Living 101” noting that the wide variety of exercises addressed most of the facets of our lives: relationships, personal transformation, oneness, purification, mind issues, heart healing and life in society. I have always enjoyed the randomness of opening a meditation book in the morning as a way to anchor the day. I particularly like Debra’s book because her practical suggestions take me away from mind and its world of concepts and situate me in a place of doing where experience become my teacher.

For example, things as simple as infusing love into the foods we prepare, blessing animals, seeing good in others and laughing bring healing into the world. The chapter called “Transform Yourself through Ritual” seems to illustrate the power of experiences: “Performed with faith, rituals will transform your heart and mind, as well as the space and environment around you” (10).

Purchase Awake in the World.
